What It Means

The term Seller can refer to any person, group of people, company, or financial firm that sells a company they own.

Why It’s Important

In the sale of any business, there are two sides: Buyer and Seller. Sellers can take a variety of forms, as outlined above, but perhaps the most important factor is the underlying reason for the sale. Is the Seller transitioning to retirement? Have they encountered a personal or family crisis that is forcing the sale? Have they simply lost interest or do they foresee an impending downturn in the company or the industry? The underlying reason for the sale will directly relate to the Seller’s level of motivation and their likely willingness to be flexible and accommodating in the negotiation process.
